The German Leather Industry
In 2011 the total turnover of the German tanning industry reached apx. 410 million EURO and the number of employees amounted to 2,500. Due to the local resources of the famous German hides, bovine and calf leathers are prevailing in the overall production.
German environmental standards are among the highest in the world. A wide range of environmentally friendly production techniques ensure the protection of natural resources and the absence of harmful substances in the finished product. German leather industry developed the first label for energy-controlled leather to determine energy efficiency and CO₂emissions of a tannery.
The whole German leather industry has been permanently working to improve environmental and social standards as well as safety requirements. The German participation will therefore indicate the present trends in the field of sustainable production that ensures preservation of natural resources by intelligent chemical and process solutions.
